Your Guide to Fall in Savannah’s Historic District

There is something particularly lovely about Savannah in the fall.

The oak trees still hold their green. Spanish moss drapes across the squares. The afternoon light settles differently against the historic buildings, and the heat of summer begins to give way to days that make you want to spend as much time outside as possible.

It is a season that suits Savannah rather well.

Fall is also one of those wonderful times when the city seems to offer something for every kind of traveler. There are festivals and performances, restaurants to discover, haunted stories to follow after dark and beautiful afternoons that require no itinerary at all.

And from our home in Savannah’s Historic District, Perry Lane Hotel puts much of it within easy reach.

Whether you are planning a romantic getaway in Savannah, gathering friends for a weekend away or simply looking for an excuse to return, consider this your invitation to experience the city this fall.

Fall in Savannah’s Historic District

Savannah is a city best discovered on foot, and cooler autumn days make wandering particularly appealing.

Step outside Perry Lane and spend the morning exploring the Historic District, where 22 park like squares create pockets of green among historic homes, churches and cobblestone streets. Walk toward Forsyth Park beneath the oaks. Take the scenic route down Jones Street. Browse the shops along Broughton Street or follow whatever catches your attention along the way.

That last part is important.

Savannah rewards curiosity. Some of the best discoveries happen when you are not particularly concerned with getting anywhere. A courtyard hidden behind an open gate. A gallery you had not planned to visit. A table outside that looks too inviting to pass by.

Fall simply gives you more reasons to keep walking.

Things to Do in Savannah This Fall

Autumn brings a full calendar to Savannah, but you do not necessarily need an event to fill your day.

Spend an afternoon discovering the city’s creative side at the SCAD Museum of Art or Telfair Museums. Explore the shops and galleries throughout downtown Savannah. Find a table for lunch and allow it to turn into a longer affair than intended.

As October approaches Halloween, another side of the city begins to emerge.

Savannah is famous for its ghost stories and centuries of folklore, making fall an especially fitting time to explore its haunted history. Ghost tours and evening walks offer a different perspective on familiar streets, where documented history and stories passed from one generation to the next have become part of the city’s character.

For those visiting later in October, the SCAD Savannah Film Festival brings filmmakers, actors and audiences to the city for a celebration of cinema.

The pleasure of fall in Savannah is that you can make the weekend as full or as unhurried as you please.

Fall Finds Its Way to Peregrin

You will find one of this season’s newest experiences without leaving Perry Lane.

From October 19 through October 31, the upper lawn at Peregrin, our rooftop bar, becomes the Peregrin Pumpkin Patch.

We are bringing a little bit of the classic pumpkin patch to the rooftop with pumpkins, hay bales and corn stalks, all set above Savannah.

Wander through the patch, pick out a pumpkin to take home or decorate one while you are here. Decorating kits will be available for purchase with classic markers or dried flowers and Mod Podge for those feeling a little more creative.

At the bar, our partnership with Angry Orchard brings the flavors of the season into the glass with cider cocktail flights created for the occasion.

And because every good October deserves a proper finale, DJ Troy joins us at Peregrin on Halloween evening from 8 to 10 p.m.

Come for a pumpkin. Stay for a cider. Take a photo or two.

Fall looks rather good from up here.

Savannah, Around the Table

There are plenty of ways to explore Savannah. We happen to think eating your way through it is one of the better ones.

At Emporium Kitchen & Wine Market, our approach begins close to home. Rooted in the flavors and hospitality of the South and shaped by influences from around the world, Emporium reflects the same curiosity that runs throughout Perry Lane.

That curiosity takes different forms throughout the week.

On Saturdays, Market to Table begins with a trip to the farmers market alongside Executive Chef Miguel Bautista. Guests choose ingredients that catch their attention, then return to Perry Lane and meet Chef Miguel again that evening. Those selections become the inspiration for a multi course dinner complemented by wine.

Our monthly Global Table travels farther. On the third Thursday of each month, the table explores a different destination through a multi course menu and accompanying wines. On October 15th we are offering From the Andes, highlighting Argentina.

And on Sunday afternoons, there is no itinerary required at all. Join us at Emporium from 3 to 4 p.m. for our complimentary weekly wine tasting.

Sometimes discovering Savannah means going out into the city. Sometimes it means pulling up a chair.

Make It a Romantic Getaway in Savannah

There is a reason Savannah has long been a favorite for couples.

Perhaps it is the oak shaded squares. The historic architecture. Dinner by candlelight. An evening walk when the streets become quieter. Or the simple pleasure of having a few days when there is nowhere you particularly need to be.

For a romantic getaway in Savannah, fall makes an especially beautiful backdrop.

Start with coffee and a morning walk through the Historic District. Spend the afternoon discovering somewhere neither of you has been before. Return to Perry Lane before dinner, then head upstairs for a cocktail at Peregrin as the city settles into evening.

The next morning, choose a different direction and begin again.

Savannah does not ask to be rushed.

Make Perry Lane Your Home in the Historic District

Where you stay changes the way you experience a city.

At Perry Lane, the Historic District is not somewhere you have to travel to each morning. You are already there.

That means the city can become part of your day naturally. Walk out for breakfast. Return in the afternoon before heading somewhere new. Stop at The Wayward for a drink. Spend an evening at Peregrin or settle in for dinner at Emporium.

Back upstairs, guest rooms are filled with individualized art and details inspired by our muse, Adelaide Harcourt, a Savannah woman whose curiosity took her around the world and eventually home again.

That idea of home is important to us.

Perry Lane was designed with the warmth and personality of a private residence in mind, giving you somewhere to return to between everything you came to Savannah to discover.

And Then Come the Holidays

One of the pleasures of autumn is knowing what comes next.

October brings pumpkins, Halloween celebrations and Savannah’s famously spirited stories. November draws us toward the table and gives us another reason to gather. Then December arrives, and Perry Lane begins celebrating some of our favorite traditions of the year.

Among them is Reindeer on the Roof, when Santa and his reindeer friends make their annual appearance above Savannah.

This year also brings The Reindeer Weekend, a limited holiday stay centered around a private daytime showing of Reindeer on the Roof. The experience also includes Breakfast with the Grinch and a special holiday amenity waiting in your room.

So while you are making plans for fall in Savannah, it may be worth looking a little further ahead.

The holidays have a way of arriving sooner than expected.
